Professor Ian Davis

 

Ian Davisan architect, has taught in various universities for the past 49 years. His main research interest has been in the fields of Shelter and Settlement planning, management and recovery following disasters. He has lectured in the UK at Oxford Brookes University and the US in the Byron Fellowship summer schools in Indiana and North Carolina on enhanced ways in which the built environment can be designed and experienced. In 2020, he published Experiencing Oxford, which explores how the architecture and open spaces in the city and university can be understood and appreciated through our senses, symbolism and association.  This exploration will form one of the case studies in the webinar programme.

Professor Juhani Pallasmaa

 

Juhani Pallasmaa is a guest lecturer in the course. He is a Finnish architect and former Professor of Architecture and Dean at the Helsinki University of Technology. He has lectured widely in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia.  He is an eminent Finnish Architect who has written numerous articles on cultural philosophy, environmental psychology and theories of architecture and the arts. Among Pallasmaa's many books on architectural theory is The Eyes of the Skin – Architecture and the Senses, a book that has become a classic of architectural theory as required reading on courses in many schools of architecture around the world. He is the world’s leading authority on architecture and the senses.
